Pancake Core – Overview

What It Is

  • A pancake core is a type of weight block found inside a bowling ball.
  • Commonly used in:
    • All polyester (plastic) balls
    • Non-performance urethane balls
    • Most house balls

Purpose

  • The pancake core compensates for weight removed during drilling
  • Ensures the ball remains:
    • Balanced
    • Symmetrical in motion
    • Predictable in roll
  • Helps maintain control for beginners or casual players

Key Features

  • Simple, round design
  • Low hook potential
  • Minimal influence on ball motion
  • Ideal for:
    • Spare shooting
    • Bowling leagues using house balls
    • Beginners learning proper release and aim

Tip for Students:

Pancake cores are for control, not power. Most advanced ball motion comes from symmetrical or asymmetrical performance cores, not pancake cores.
